The year 2024 marked a major milestone for the Children’s Welfare and Research Foundation (CWRF) as it celebrated 40 years of supporting sick and disadvantaged children. To honor this achievement, the foundation hosted several successful fundraisers, reinforcing its commitment to making a lasting impact.
One of the year’s highlights was the 40th Anniversary Golf Day on May 17, which brought together 25 teams for a day of golf in support of CWRF’s charitable partners. The event raised over £110,000, showcasing the generosity of supporters.
Additionally, trustees Kevin Moran and David Jones led two cycling fundraisers, rallying over 40 participants. David completed the Ring of Kerry ride, while Kevin’s company, MP Moran, supported the Palace to Palace cycle ride in October. These efforts raised £25,000 for the foundation’s cause.
2024 was also marked by sadness with the passing of two esteemed trustees. Tony McGovern, a dedicated board member since 2004, played a key role in CWRF’s success. John Carey, a founding trustee, helped shape the foundation and raise over £3,000,000 for children’s charities. Their generosity and dedication leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire.
2022 saw a successful Golf Day raise over £110,000, which will help support our charitable partners. We also passed the £1,000,000 milestone in total donations to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our Board was also strengthened by the arrival of Kevin Moran, Rory O’Connor and Keith Masterson.
After years of loyal service, we had several retirements including Joe O’Sullivan, John McGee and Mike Cantillon.
This year saw Jim McArdle take on our Chairman role. Our golf day found a new home at Moor Park and we surpassed £300,000 in lifetime donations for the Skeletal Cancer Trust.
David Jones takes over our accounting duties from Joe O’Sullivan. Michael Durkan also retires after 34 years of loyal support.
Sean McNicholas, son of our founding chairman Bernard, joins our Board of Trustees starting the tradition of family members joining our board.
Our founding Chairman, Bernard McNicholas, sadly passes away. Fellow founding trustee and generous supporter, John Carey, takes over the role as Chairman.
At the behest of Skeletal Cancer Trust (SCT) chairman, Steve Cannon, we made our first donation of £25,000 to the SCT. Today the SCT is one of our primary charitable partners.
At a presentation in Dublin, the CWRF presented a cheque for €1,000,000 to Our Lady’s Hospital in Dublin.

Our partnership, with our now longest-serving charitable partner, commenced. We are proud to support, even in a small way, the amazing support Great Ormond Street Hospital gives to ill children and young adults.
On our eighth anniversary, the CWRF surpassed £600,000 in donations for several charities across the UK and Ireland.
Our original trustees (Jim McArdle, John Carey and Paddy Kelly) formed the CWRF and held our inaugural Golf Day at Ealing Golf Club.
